Webinar: Energy Efficiency in the Data Center

Cisco Systems will be contributing to advancing Green ICT awareness with a webinar titled "Energy Efficiency in the Data Center" beginning 21 August. Planned topics include data center design, energy metrics, and perspectives from both IT and facilities specialists. You can see an 3 minute preview on YouTube now, then register for the full 60 minute version. Cisco has invited me to preview the full program; I'll add my review as a comment to this post as soon as I do.

A Wealth of Data Center Data

The McKinsey / Uptime Institute report Revolutionizing Data Center Efficiency, available as both a PowerPoint and a podcast, contains a wealth of current and projected data on energy utilization and GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, including information about what various enterprises are doing. Among its findings:

The 2008 Green Media Summit

Media industry practitioners can access audio and slide presentations of the sessions at the 2008 Green Media Summit. The focus is on media replication, packaging, and distribution, but other topics are covered during the day-long program.

Supply Chain Evaluation Tools

Vertatique has noted the trend toward businesses tracking the environmental impact of their supply chains. These enterprises are finding any increasing array of tools to help them do this. For example, supply chain application software provider ILOG now offers a Carbon Footprint Extension to help companies analyze and minimize carbon emissions. ILOG has partnered with Accenture to offer a webcast series about green supply chains.

IBM's Project Big Green goes Hollywood

The entertainment industry requires massive amounts of compute power for special effects, animation, game creation, and online rich media. Advances like "virtual backlots" reduce some environmental impacts, but also increase the demand for computational horsepower and communications bandwidth. IBM is now incorporating Hollywood into its Project Big Green, as announced last week at the Hollywood Goes Green conference. Here is IBM's Project Big Green video:

Symantec 2007 Green Data Center Report

Software maker Symantec released its 2007 Green Data Center Report in late November. Among its findings:

"Currently, only one in seven data center managers globally has implemented or has begun to implement a green data center. However, an additional 57 percent are in the discussion, planning, or trial stage, with only 29 percent not yet even considering a green data center."

Sun Eco Podcasts

Those of us attuned to audio information can now get podcasts from Sun Micosystems, a company regularly covered by Vertatique. The podcasts cover green computing and other aspects of sustainability and technology. iTunes link: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=1605516...

Data Center Constraints Represent Sustainability Opportunity

The Gartner Group states that 80 percent of the world's data centers are constrained by heat, space, and power requirements, according to Sun Microsystems. If this drives many data centers to expand/move in the next few years, then many data centers will have a good opportunity to adopt a more sustainable way of doing business . . .
