Cyber Warming

The BBC recently reported on the UK's effort to combat cyber warming, which it defines as "carbon dioxide emissions from the production, operation and disposal of computers"

A public-private task force know as "Green Shift" has some very specific goals:

  • offer by late 2009 a data center service with machines that use 98% less energy than standard PCs.
  • use 75% fewer resources in the production of PCs.

The article also states that "IT equipment is thought to generate 35m tonnes of harmful CO2 gas each year", but does not specify the geographical/political entity  to which this statistic applies.
