More Carbon To Make the DVD Than To Get It To The Store

A comparison of two studies of physical media distribution reveals that manufacturing, not shipment to retail outlets, emits most of the carbon.

The Microsoft/Accenture/WPS study of Microsoft Office and the NewsCorp/CCC study of a Fox Entertainment release show that creating the package generates 3-6 times the greenhouse gas emissions as getting it to the store. Here is the breakdown.
  Microsoft NewsCorp
Manufacture 86% 72%
Distribution 14% 28%

Note that these two studies use different methodologies, so this represents our best interpretation of the data. We've also performed an analysis of the carbon footprint of the media production and manufacture/distirbution phases of the NewsCorp project.
