Only a Tertiary Source?

Enterprises are increasingly using outside data centers to execute large-scale, critical operations ranging from e-commerce to media delivery. Yet assessments of carbon footprints and other environmental impacts have considered these out-sourced functions to be "tertiary" and therefore often excluded from the calculations.

There is no good reason to continue doing so . . .

A growing body of data and formulas can now be used to calculate the impact of external data center operations. Those impacts can be included in an enterprise's secondary sources, just like the impacts of its traditional utility suppliers. Responsible enterprises should insist that this be done in future carbon footprint calculations and other environmental impact assessments.
